The 9 Step Engineering Process

The engineering process is a series of steps that engineers must follow to create and construct a product. There are many models of the process of engineering that include less or more steps however most follow a similar pattern. In this article we will review a 9-step engineering design process that engineers employ to solve specific problems.

The first step of the engineering design process involves defining the problem. This is an important step, as a failure to clearly and precisely define the issue could result in delays at a later time in the design cycle. The solution to a problem naturally emerges in this stage. For example when students were asked to come up with a solution to attach their school lunch hooks onto the desk’s bottom, they came up with a simple solution of attaching a hook to the bottom of the desk.

The next step is to conduct an analysis of requirements to determine the specifics of customer needs and the resources available. This helps you come up with a concrete set of project requirements and limitations. If a customer wants something that can handle 20 pounds of weight The engineer will figure out the maximum capacity of the system and the size of the hook to ensure it can hold all the lunches for all students.

The next phase, referred to as design planning or design synthesis, is where details are established and the precise design of the final product is created. This involves setting up the inputs, outputs and interconnections of the different modules that make up the whole system. This phase comprises Gantt and Pert chart as well as spreadsheets for loading resources, drawings, sketches and proof-of-concept models.
